Here this is only its second iteration, the first one used different pieces for the rear legs, which caught on the carpet too much and wouldn’t let it go anywhere (the geometry and balance aren’t perfect, so the rear legs kinda drag a bit at times).
This was made after I had stolen several parts from my Lego vacuum tractor while leaving the vacuum engine part intact. I decided to reuse it for other things since it works pretty well by now, so the first new thing I’ve made with it is this walking machine.
The walking mechanism is a simple design that’s been around for a long time, and it relies on leaning side-to-side to lift the rear legs. This works quite well if you get the geometry right, which I have not, so mine walks a bit awkwardly. The stiff pool noodle air hose disrupting its balance doesn’t help either. But nevertheless, it manages to slowly creep forward until a little axle gradually works its way loose and disconnects the engine output from the legs, which is what causes the machine to halt its progress near the end of the video :p
This thing is fun. Maybe a steam shovel or something next...
